Glorious Silence
hoisting herself down, she leapt gently into the tiny boat. it's faded blue paint had been chipped and worn with the years, and yet held tight as if made yesterday, and it swayed with the new weight. she settled herself opposite him, smoothing out the wrinkles in her dress nervously, and glanced uncertainly up at him.
his face, unfathomable, was showing no signs of the secret, and yet had an exciteable boyish playfullness about it that made her mind squirm with anxiety and question. his sandy blonde hair fell across his face, covering his hazel eyes from view as he grasped the two oars and started to row, pushing the canoe out into the lake.
the water was remarkably still as they silently slid through it, cutting precisely in a straight line, leaving in it's place steady ripples rolling in all directions. she looked around her, averting her eyes from him and noticing everything else. the magestic trees that surrounded the lake towered tall, creating green pillars, encasing them from all the world.
not a sound could be heard except for the steady breathing of him and the swish of the oars in the smooth water. no birds singing, no voices shouting. all was quiet and undisturbed as the morning sun rose above the barricade of pine trees, and lighting the earth. with this new addition, she looked about her once more.
with the passing of time they had come to an even more secluded spot. the trees had closed in around them, making it more of a large lagoon, with spotlights of sunshine streaming through the branches of the trees, casting showers of golden light over the water. and floating all in the lucid waters below them were hundreds of swans. ivory-white, they drifted in dizzy circles around them, soundless.
she gasped with an awed pleasure, holding her hand to her ruby red lips as she suppressed a grin. whirling about, she looked into his eyes.
the greenish-brown circles of rampid delight stared back at her, dancing with a knowing excitement. he slowly knelt down in the center of the boat, stealing his hand away to his pocket -for but only a moment- and pulling out a single silver ring. bringing it to his lips, he brushed it lightly with a kiss, then beckoned her forward, holding it out to her. the solitary diamond gleamed in a ray of golden sunlight as he parted his lips and uttered his most important question.
and all time stopped. for a moment, even the swans had stopped living, everything was frozen in the positive bliss they withheld. then with sudden movement, she threw her head back, laughing in a silvery tone that filled the woods, echoing through the trees and bouncing off the stagnant waters.
the birds in unison came up out of the pond, fluttering away as she fell into his arms...and all was once again quiet.........
